What is Math Disability?
Math Disability affects an individual's ability to learn math calculations, concepts and reasoning. A child with a math deficit may have trouble remembering basic arithmetic facts (e.g., 4+5=9 or 4x5=20). Others may have difficulty grasping the concepts of numbers (e.g., that "4" and "four" are symbols that represent a set of four things) or counting (e.g., counting the same object as "one" and "two" is not correct). A child with a math disability may have a firm understanding of basic number facts but instead struggle with the actual math calculations (e.g., recalling to how to borrow or carry a number).

As with other learning disabilities, math deficits can range from mild to severe and have very different symptoms. One aspect of math disability is dyscalculia, which means "trouble with calculating" and focuses on difficulties with basic math skills. Calculators can help kids who have dyscalculia answer math problems more accurately.

Children who have trouble with math may be inaccurately labeled as having dyscalculia, when in actuality their math problems may be related to language. That's why it's important to identify the specific disability -- whether problems with calculation or understanding concepts -- rather than use a general term.

Common signs:
The symptoms of Math Disability vary from person to person. However, some typical characteristics include:
  • Difficulty keeping track of time
  • Difficulty grasping math concepts
  • Difficulty solving math problems consistently and correctly
  • Difficulty with counting and numbers
